popping a squat
i was shocked when i came to japan last year and first saw the extremely normal and common way for japanese people, ranging from child to old person, to sit or rest. kneel i suppose. to an unassuming american, the position almost looked crude due to the fact it looks as though they were squatting to go to the bathroom. and actually, with traditional japanese toilets, which i have come to prefer over the western style toilet, this is the way you must position yourself to use it properly. but, enough with the toilet talk! it's actually comfortable to squat like this after you train your feet and ankles to bear the awkward-at-first weight distribution. i often assume it and love to see the japanese doing it as well. i'm envious, those japanese are so limber continuing into their older years!
